  • DRONACHARYA AND DRUPAD
    March 20, 2004
    Hartford, WI

Given in the Mahabharat, Drona, a poor Brahmin (and the son of Sage Bharadwaj), and Drupad, the wealthy prince of Panchal, became good friends while studying together in an aashram. Once, noticing the worried expression on Drona's face, Drupad discovered that his friend was concerned about how he would earn a living after leaving the aashram. Drupad immediately assured him that he had no need to worry since once Drupad was crowned king, he would give half of his kingdom to Drona.

The time in the aashram passed and both Drona and Drupad went their separate ways. In due time, Drona married Kripi (Kripacharya's sister) and the couple had a child whom they named Ashvathama. The family was so poor that they could not even afford to give real milk to their child. Kripi thus insisted that Drona go and see his old friend Drupad. If not half the kingdom, he should at least get a few cows from his friend. Drona finally agreed and set out to visit the king of Panchal. But when he reached the kingdom, seeing the way he was feebly dressed, the guards stopped him and relayed the message to King Drupad of a visitor who claimed to be an old friend. Drupad remembered his friend, but many years had passed and he had grown attached to the kingdom. Drupad thus insulted Drona with the message that only equals could be friends, and since Drona was obviously of a different class, they could not be friends. This hurt Drona very deeply.

Drona then came across the playing grounds of the princes of the Hastinapur court, the Pandav and Kaurav brothers. Drona saw that a ball had fallen into a well, and the brothers were unable to retrieve it. Using his prowess with weapons (as blessed by Parashuram), Drona flung a branch into the ball, and then strung more branches, one after the other, until the ball could be pulled out. Seeing this amazing display of skill, the princes requested him to become their guru and teach them martial arts. Drona agreed and he became the royal teacher of the Hastinapur princes.

Upon completion of their studies, as an expression of their gratitude, students give the master a gift, called guru-dakshinaa. For guru-dakshinaa, Dronacharya asked the students to capture Drupad's kingdom. After the Kaurav brothers were unsuccessful, Arjun (Dronacharya's favorite disciple) and the Pandavs captured Drupad and brought him to Dronacharya. Dronacharya reminded him of the promise they had made as friends, and returned half the kingdom to him! Drupad was humiliated and sought revenge. From a sacrifice, he later begot Draupadi (wife of the Five Pandavs) and Dhristadyumna, a son that was born to kill Dronacharya. The prophecy eventually came true during the Mahabharat war.

    WAUKEGAN MOORTI FIRST EXPERIENCE
    March 20, 2004
    Hartford, WI

Dinkar Uncle began working at Abbott Labs on September 16, 1976. On August 23, 1977, he moved into the Waukegan home. Dinkar Uncle's wife, Sudhaben, passed away on March 16, 1980 due to Hodgkin's disease, leaving behind two children, Roopit and Amy. At the time, Dinkar Uncle took the vow to never touch women, except his daughter. At the same time, Kusumben, Sudhaben's older sister and also a devotee of Kakaji, undertook the service to take care of the children.

After Kakaji enshrined the moorti of Swaminarayan Bhagwan at the Waukegan mandira on June 21 1981, a personal experience displayed its divine powers. During the installation, Kakaji had given the blessings that any sincere prayer done in front of this moorti for 15 minutes will be answered.

Some time after the moorti pratishthaa (installation ceremony), there was a new manager position opening at Abbott. Kusumben told Kakaji that it would be ideal if Dinkar Uncle got the new job because his current position required too much traveling, and Roopit and Amy often refused to eat dinner because they missed their father. Kakaji did dhoona (chanting) for fifteen minutes and said that the job belonged to Dinkar Uncle. Dinkar Uncle interviewed with the hiring manager, but later found out that the following Monday, an individual from Johnson and Johnson would fill the position. Kusumben told this to Kakaji who answered, "To date, any prayer I have made remembering Swaminarayan Bhagwan and Gunatitanand Swami has never gone unheard."

So Kakaji again did fifteen minutes dhoona and repeated that the position belonged to Dinkar Uncle and the person that was to come in on Monday would find a better job. On Monday, exactly what Kakaji had said happened: the person that was supposed to fill the position accepted another offer. That same day, Dinkar Uncle happened to meet the hiring manager, who requested that he appear for a second interview. Ultimately, Dinkar Uncle got the job, as a result of which all of his traveling ended. Kakaji also added that, "The job will be yours for 5 years." In 1985, Kakaji said, "The job will remain yours for another 5 years." Exactly at the end of the 5 year period, Dinkar Uncle moved to a Project Consultant position. In 2001, Abbott Labs celebrated 25 years of Dinkar Uncle's service.

    TO STAY IN AKSHARDHAM
    March 21, 2004
    Hartford, WI

In Swami Ni Vato 1/89, Gunatitanand Swami explains, "It is said that monkeys do not stay in Vaikunth. Thus, we should cultivate such a nature that allows us to stay with God. We should do that here or after going to Shvetdvip."

After Lord Rama defeated the demon Ravan, before going back to Vaikunth (Lord Rama's Abode), he decided to liberate every soul in Ayodhya. Lord Rama asked everyone to bathe in the Saryu River, including the monkeys. Immediately, the monkeys assumed a chaturbhuj (four-armed) divine form, and went to Vaikunth. However, because their nature was not purified, they left heaven.
